One of the three main “Trekking Peaks of India”, Stok Kangri stands tall at an altitude of over 20,000 feet. Famed for being the country’s highest trekkable peak, despite its altitude Stok Kangri requires little technical knowledge; though do ensure to bring along plenty of grit and determination (not to mention a certain level of fitness)! Your reward? Breathtaking views of the Ladakh and Karakoram Himalayan Ranges, from the Zanskar to the Indus Valley. The perfect initiation into the world of climbing, Stok Kangri is a non-technical trek, easily accessible for the uninitiated, and is the perfect entry into the world of mountaineering.

Day 01: Leh 
Arrive in Leh. Spend the day acclimatising at your leisure.

Overnight at hotel, Leh

Day 02: Leh 
Meet with the rest of your group for orientation and briefing. Spend the rest of the day preparing for tomorrow’s trek.

Day 03: Leh to Mankarmo
Reach the picturesque Stok village, where you can witness rural Ladakhi life, just a thirty-minute drive, yet a world away from Leh. From here we will begin our ascent to Mankarmo (13,940 feet).

Approximate trek time: Four to five hours
Overnight at camp, Mankarmo

Day 04: Mankarmo to Stok Kangri Base Camp 
Wake up at sunrise and set off for Stok Kangri Base Camp (16,400 ft). Spend the rest of the day in preparation for you summit, in two days time. Today WPA’s will give you a briefing on the following techniques, in preparation for our summit:

  • Self-arrest technique
  • Walking with crampons - front pointing and flat footing (35 degrees to 55 degrees)
  • Basic knot practising
  • Ascending and descending techniques
  • Basic self-rescue techniques
  • Handling small accidents

Approximate trek time: Two to Three hours.

Day 05: Stok Kangri Base Camp 
Acclimatisation walk to the surrounding glaciers (17,700 feet) before returning to Base Camp. Spend the rest of the day in preparation for your summit, the following day.

Day 06: Stok Kangri Summit
The day has come! Wake up in the small hours, and watch the sunrise. Today is going to be a long day. You will need as much mental strength as you are physical, but the rewards are huge. After a long day’s walking, panoramic vistas across the Ladakh and Karakoram ranges, right from the Zanskar to the Indus Valley, make it all worth it. Glimpse the Saser Kangri, at a height of 25,000 feet.

Day 07: Stok Kangri Base Camp to Leh
Trek back to Stok Village before returning to Leh by car.

Approximate trek time: four to five hours.

Day 08: Leh - onwards travel
Breakfast with your group and new found friends before departing for your onward travel.

How To Reach

Nearest Airport:
Nearest Airport is Kushok Bakula Rimpoche Airport is 5 Kms. leh, which is the nearest airport. Taxi services are available from the airport to Leh, costing between Rs.400 - Rs.1,000. Leh is well connected to Delhi by air. However, if you plan a trip to this area of the country, do book your tickets well in advance as prices can skyrocket! A beautiful flight, try and get a seat on the left-hand side of the plane for the very best views. 

By Road:
The road from Manali to Leh is only open in the summers, with a journey time ranging between two and four days. You should also make sure that you carry at least two spare tires. A good advice would be to carry a sleeping bag with you well, as the bus may stop in the middle of nowhere for the overnight stay.
Another route to Leh via Srinagar, also takes around two days. On this route, you would pass through famous spots like Kargil and Khalsi.
